“I personally and Gavi, more generally, are committed to the principle of gender equity and I am pleased that Gavi is joining this initiative. In addition to the specific commitments pledged below, I would like to highlight that Gavi supports the use of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, which protects against the lead cancer in women. We are expecting through our programmatic efforts that the vaccine will have been used by 30 million girls in 40 countries by 2020.”
I, Seth Berkley, support the GGC Panel Parity Pledge.
As the Chief Executive Officer of Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance, I commit to also undertake the following:
- To do the utmost to implement the stringent Guidelines on Gender Balance, the Gavi Alliance Board must establish and maintain a ratio of 60/40 male/female for Board Members and Alternate Members. The gender balance shall be deemed to be within the acceptable range if there is no more than 60% of any one gender. The Governance Committee of the Board reports to the Board on a bi-annual basis on the Board’s adherence to this requirement.
- To monitor the results of the gender equity-related indicator in Gavi’s strategic framework for 2016-2020. The indicator uses education status as a proxy for women’s empowerment and tracks the differential level of vaccine coverage between women with no education and women with secondary or higher education. Gavi will also monitor the indicator at the country level in the performance framework for individual countries.
